Success Story: She Came Back to Life After a Severe Myasthenic Crisis

Some of medicine’s greatest victories begin when hope appears to be fading. The story of Ms. M.B., a Nigerian mother from Katsina State, is a remarkable journey that demonstrates the importance of an accurate diagnosis, specialized care, and perseverance during the most difficult moments.

Two years ago, Ms. M.B. arrived in Egypt carrying more questions than answers. For several months, she had received treatment for what was believed to be a psychiatric and neurological disorder. Despite taking multiple medications, her condition continued to deteriorate. She became weaker each day until even the simplest movements became a major challenge.

Searching for the Correct Diagnosis

When the patient reached Hospitals Co Egypt, our medical coordination team arranged a comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluation.

The assessment revealed the underlying cause of her symptoms: myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease that disrupts communication between the nerves and muscles, resulting in muscle weakness that can vary considerably in severity.

Under the care of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Sadeq, Professor of Neurology, the patient began a treatment plan suited to her condition. Signs of improvement gradually appeared. Her strength began to return, her smile came back, and she eventually became well enough to travel home to Nigeria.

A Severe Crisis Brought the Danger Back

Her journey, however, was not over. Ms. M.B. developed a severe chest infection that triggered a life-threatening myasthenic crisis. She was admitted to an intensive care unit and required mechanical ventilation for more than 40 days while her family endured an extremely difficult period.

As soon as her condition became stable enough for travel, she made one request:

“I want to go back to Egypt.”

The Hospitals Co Egypt team immediately coordinated her return. We received her at Cairo International Airport and transferred her directly to the hospital, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit in an extremely critical condition.

Five Sessions and a Turning Point

The patient underwent five plasma exchange sessions, also known as PLEX. This procedure removes plasma containing harmful antibodies and replaces it with appropriate fluids according to the medical team’s assessment.

The first days were heartbreaking. There was almost no visible response, and everyone understood how critical her condition remained.

Then, by the grace of Allah, the turning point came after the fifth session.

She opened her eyes. Her breathing began to improve, and her muscles gradually regained their strength. With every sign of progress, hope returned to her family and medical team.

Within approximately two weeks, Ms. M.B. was able to walk out of the hospital.

A Continuing Treatment Journey

Her medical journey continued after discharge through long-term immunotherapy and regular follow-up.

Because of complications associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation, she later underwent successful tracheal reconstruction surgery. She also underwent a thymectomy as part of the treatment plan developed by the specialists managing her condition.

Together with medical treatment and consistent follow-up, these interventions supported the stabilization of her condition and gave her a better opportunity to continue her life with improved health and quality of life.

Returning to Her Family and Everyday Life

Today, Ms. M.B. continues to receive her scheduled treatment and attend regular follow-up appointments. Her condition is stable, and she has returned to her family, her children, and her everyday activities.
